In Device Configuration, choose a ForgeOS EIP device based on how you want to configure your system:
-
EIP ForgeOS Adapter: ForgeOS defines a set of I/O that other devices can interface with using Ethernet/IP. (This is usually how ForgeOS connects to a PLC.)
-
EIP ForgeOS Device: A fixed instance of the below device that connects to a ForgeOS adapter. (This is currently the best way to send data between two instances of ForgeOS.)
-
EIP Generic Device: A generic Ethernet/IP scanner device for connecting to arbitrary adapter devices (I/O, cameras, sensors, etc.). Connection parameters provided by the adapter are entered in Device Configuration to create the connection.
For example, if you’re looking to set up a PLC for I/O, you can either have the PLC be the adapter so that ForgeOS talks to the PLC's I/O, or you can have ForgeOS be the adapter so that the PLC talks to Forge’s IO.
Think of the adapter as a server and the other device as the client (“scanner” in EIP terms) that talks to that server.
